Working in the public sector has been an exhilarating lifelong adventure for me! I adore helping people and making a genuine impact in their lives. Over more than two decades, I've had the incredible privilege of collaborating with dedicated frontline workers who give their all every single day, often going above and beyond the call of duty to serve the community. These individuals are the backbone of our public services, and their unwavering commitment to excellence inspires me continually. They face numerous challenges, from limited resources to high demand for services, yet they approach each day with resilience and a determination to make a difference in the lives of those they serve. Since the onset of the pandemic, it has been truly inspiring to witness a significant shift in the workforce, where employees are increasingly speaking out about their personal needs and feelings within this public workspace.

This is newfound openness and has fostered a culture of transparency and empathy, allowing for more meaningful conversations about mental health, job satisfaction, and work-life balance. As a result, we are seeing a transformation in the way middle management oversees these amazing staff members. We must start to insert coaching and empathy rather than solely focusing on productivity and task completion. There is now a greater emphasis on nurturing a supportive environment where employees feel valued and heard. This shift in perspective not only enhances morale but also leads to improved job performance and service delivery. Managers are beginning to understand the importance of actively engaging with their teams, seeking feedback, and implementing changes that address the unique challenges faced by frontline workers. By prioritizing their well-being, we are creating a more sustainable and effective workforce that is better equipped to meet the needs of the public. The evolution of this dynamic is a testament to the resilience of our public sector and the incredible people who dedicate their lives to serving others. I am truly grateful to be part of this journey, where every day brings new opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute to the greater good.
